Centennial committee meeting notes, April 11, 2007
The regular meeting of the City of Okanogan Centennial Planning Committee was called to order at 7:02 p.m.
The following were present: Mayor Michael Blake, Carolyn Clayton, Homer and Jennie Hedington, Dorrie and Louie Wood, Doug Woodrow, Bonnie Rawson, Lola Tuikka, Barbara Scarborough, Nancy Nash, Carolyn Henry, Elizabeth Edwards, Ray Doll, Water Manager, Building Official/Permit Administrator Johnson and Kris Lingle, Clerk 1.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the minutes of the March 28, meeting were approved as presented.
Updates and Progress Reports
Completion of the Logo -Members were wearing logo attire at the meeting.
Postal Commemorative Cancellation Stamp - Finished
Letter to Descendants and All School Letters- Carolyn Clayton reported they are receiving lots of replies to the letters.
Letter to Elected Officials - Mayor Blake noted he would be making follow up phone calls.
City Beautification - Lola Tiukka brought progress pictures of the Sunny Okanogan Sign. She stated the Master Gardeners are on schedule and the materials have been delivered. The grant people came last week and it went well. The grant should be announced May 2nd or 3rd.
Float -The float is coming along great. The committee plans to bring it out of the shop and try out the moving parts on Saturday. All the materials for the characters were donated by Dan Brown.
The Committee decided to take the float to the Oroville May Day Celebration.
Car Show - Bill Laws will sign up cars for the parade.
Newspaper Stories Jessica and Georgine - In Progress
Time Capsule - Doug Woodrow brought in the work in progress. It should be finished in a couple weeks. The finished product will be faux marble with the centennial logo sand blasted on it.
Banners for 2nd Avenue - Bonnie Rawson reported the banners are ordered and will be in soon.
Street Dance -Rusty Bonser-
Quilt - Members discussed the display of the quilt around town. It was decided that The Rusty Shovel would be a good place to start. Mayor Blake ordered a banner from Pepsi to advertise the place it is displayed and that tickets are available.
Promotional Brochures - Kris Lingle asked for help in the distribution of the brochures. They will be sent to Visitor Information Centers throughout the area. Barbara Scarborough volunteered to package the brochures for mailing.
Old Time Photos - Doug Woodrow reported the photos done by the students are ready for display in the area businesses.
Old Time Portraits - Tim Patrick will provide that service
Tractor Show - LaWanda Jones - Location behind Blackwell Building
Bunting -Dorrie and Louie Wood will be taking the bunting sample around town for orders.
Airport involvement - The airport will not have anything for the Okanogan Days Celebration
Cake -Baines Title and Franks Barber Shop will be sponsoring the cake. Assembly of the cakes was discussed.
Bike/Run combination from Conconully to Okanogan - Cancelled.
Greeters - Period Personalities - Marile Kunkel organizing
School (Homecoming etc.) This is a fall event
Water Balloon Toss - John Combs
Memorabilia -The pins are ordered they should be here in about a week. The coin proofs will also be arriving soon.
Tug of War - Mayor Blake stated he has a rope and will have it at the park for an unorganized tug of war for fun.
Who Stole the Courthouse - Jack Hamilton
Tribal Involvement -Elizabeth Edwards reported that Colville Tribal Enterprises would bring the spin the wheel game to the Okanogan Days Celebration. She has spoken with vendors for fry bread and crafts. She will look into parade entrants. Dancers
Hispanic Celebrations- No Update
Fireworks - Mayor Blake -Depending on funds
Mid Valley Hospital - Autumn Leaf Run, Nancy Nash and Carolyn Henry brought a sample flyer for the Autumn Leaf Run in for the Committees review. Members requested they add the Centennial Logo and look for an updated courthouse picture with the clocks. Nancy will be discussing the date with Mike Billings. The committee request4ed the run be moved to the Harvestfest weekend. It would provide lots of entertainment for participants and spectators. They are planning a health fair in August for pre run exercises during Farmer's Market.
Bleachers -Mayor Blake stated he would speak with Ray Clements about purchasing more bleachers. The school bleachers will not be available due to graduation. Members requested chairs be set up once again. Building Official/Permit Administrator Johnson stated the Fire Department would provide the chairs.
Heatstroke - Brian Horner from Heatstroke has offered the committee 25% of the profit from sales if they work his booth during Okanogan Days. He has family obligations and wont be available to do it. The committee agreed it would fit in with the hatpin and coin sales and would be a great fundraiser.
Statue - Mayor Blake met with Dan Brown and Doug Woodrow about the Frank Matsura Statue. Mr. Woodrow showed pictures of both the aluminum statue and bronze statues. Mayor Blake expressed his desire to wait and raise funds for the bronze. Members voted to begin a yearlong fundraising effort to obtain a bronze statue.
Grand Marshal's - Bonnie Rawson asked the committee when they would like to present the Grand Marshall's with a certificate and invite them to the parade. It was decided to do so at the May Chamber Luncheon.
Porta Potties - Pumpco will once again donate porta potties. The committee decided that they should double the number of potties available and provide hand-washing stations. Possibly, locate them at the Blackwell Building and On The Avenue.
