Inmate dies after hanging herself in cell

OKANOGAN - A jail inmate is dead after hanging herself in her cell the evening of July 30.

Spokane resident Sophia A. Stewart, 32, was found hanging by a bed sheet at 7:14 p.m., Okanogan Count Undersheriff Joe Somday said.

She had been in jail since March on suspicion of first-degree burglary, third-degree theft and two counts of theft of a firearm.

Stewart had gotten into an altercation with another inmate earlier in the day and was in a lockdown cell, Somday said. A jailer had checked on her less than a half-hour earlier.

CPR was started as soon as she was found. She was taken by ambulance to Mid-Valley Hospital, Omak, where she died at 8:15 p.m.
