New fire discovered in North Cascades

MARBLEMOUNT - A new fire has been added to the North Cascades National Park fire complex.

The Big Beaver Fire was discovered Aug. 14 on the north slope of Sourdough Mountain. As of Friday morning, it was less than an acre in size and burning in steep terrain, spokesman Rick Acosta said.

Fire crews are monitoring the fire from Desolation Lookout and from a boat on Ross Lake. Smoke may be visible from Ross Lake, on the western side of the fire complex that borders Okanogan County.

Other fires are Arctic Dan, started July 17; Red Mountain Fire, started Aug. 9; Ruby Fire, started Aug. 7; Cabin Creek Fire, started Aug. 10; Boathouse Fire, started Aug. 10; Sourdough Chute Fire, started July 17; McAlester Fire, started Aug. 5. Collectively, the eight fires are being managed as the Arctic Dan Fire Complex.

Except for Arctic Dan - at 250 acres - all are less than one acre in size. Cabin Creek, Boathouse, Sourdough Chute and McAlester are considered extinguished.
