OKANOGAN A man wanted for a drive-by shooting last month in East Wenatchee was arrested Aug. 23 in Bridgeport.
Jose Luis Sanchez, 24, was booked into the Okanogan County Jail on Douglas County charges of first-degree attempted murder with a firearm, two counts of first-degree assault with a firearm, drive-by shooting, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and a warrant for failure to appear for third-degree theft.
He was charged Aug. 5 and made a preliminary appearance Aug. 26. Bail is set at $1 million.
He was sought for a July 28 drive-by shooting in which people in a vehicle reportedly fired several shots toward a couple and their baby at 6:14 p.m. at Wenatchee Valley Mall. The victims apparently did not know Sanchez, but had encountered him earlier that day in the mall.
On Aug. 1, detectives searched the home of Sanchez’s parents in the 2100 block of Tacoma Street in Bridgeport, but he was not there. Police have been looking for him since.
Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal said his office received an anonymous tip via text message that Sanchez was at the Chief Joseph Tavern, 1128 Columbia Ave., Bridgeport. He was said to be associated with a blue car.
The deputy located a car matching the description and kept watch until two men and a woman came out of the tavern and got in the car. The vehicle was stopped and all three were ordered out of the car, Gjesdal said.
Sanchez was identified as a passenger and was arrested. The other two were released.
Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said the Brewster Police Department and Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
Gjesdal said his office appreciates tips, such as the text message, from the public.
Several drive-by shootings with local links have been reported in Okanogan and Ferry counties in recent years.
On July 14, Vernon M. Saulque Jr., 30, was held in the Colville Tribal Corrections Facility on suspicion of four counts of attempted criminal homicide after a drive-by shooting in Nespelem.
