Oroville finds way past Curlew boys

Okanogan puts 98 on Medical Lake

— Oroville found a way past Curlew, 52-48, in a non-league game Saturday.

“It was a good first win for the young Hornets against a tough Curlew team,” Oroville coach Jay Thacker said.

The teams were tied at 24 at halftime before the Cougars led, 35-30 after three periods.

The Hornets went on a 22-11 run in the final quarter.

Joe Sarmiento scored 14 points, Nathan Hugus 12 and Dustin Nigg 10 for Oroville.

Daniel Tresham scored 17 points and Mathan Knapp 10 for Curlew.

Tonasket is at Oroville on Friday before the Hornets go to Chelan on Saturday.

Selkirk is at Curlew on Friday before the Cougars go to Northport on Saturday.

OKANOGAN – The Okanogan High School boys flirted with the century mark in topping Medical Lake, 98-62, in a non-league game Saturday.

The Bulldogs led 41-25 at the half.

“We had a solid first half,” Okanogan coach Mike Carlquist said. “They hit five 3-pointers to keep themselves in the game.”

Okanogan scored 57 points in the second half.

Jim Townsend scored 33 points to go with 12 rebounds.

Justin Rivas had 30 points, 6 assists and 6 steals.

Justin VanderWeide chipped in 11 points.

BREWSTER – The Brewster High School boys basketball team knocked off Pateros, 70-40, on Saturday.

Easton Driessen scored 18 points to go with 10 rebounds while Cade Smith produced 8 points and 15 boards for the Bears.

Macen McLean and Carlos Ceniceros each scored 10 points for the Billygoats, who fell behind 40-10 at the half.

“It was the first game of the year against a tough Brewster team at their place,” Pateros coach Marcus Stennes said. “We had trouble getting it going.”

COULEE CITY – Omak got double-digit scoring from four players to beat Almira/Coulee-Hartline, 66-54, in a non-league game Saturday.

“I felt we picked it up defensively in the second half,” Omak coach Kyle Desautel said. “We had pretty balanced scoring and seemed to score in the paint when we needed it.”

Leighton Boyd scored 18 points to lead the Pioneers. Other top scorers included Chance Williams with 13 points, Cody Smith with 12 and Philip Williams with 11.

Dallas Isaak scored 27 points, with 8 coming in the second half for the Warriors.

Omak (66) – Covington 1, vanSinten 4, Boyd 18, Desjardins 4, Frank 3, Saxon 0, Smith 12, C. Williams 13, P. Williams 11, Lamb 0.

REPUBLIC – Odessa-Harrington made a strong first half hold up for a 43-26 non-league victory over Republic on Friday.

“No doubt our size hurt us,” Republic coach Dan Groom said. “Odessa-Harrington has a couple of 6-3 posts and a couple of quick guards. Our better defensive intensity in the second half kept us in the game, but we never could solve their size inside.”

Garrett Weller scored 7 points and Aaron Fritts 6 points for Republic. Weller and Fritts are the only returning starters.

Republic goes to Cusick on Friday and to Inchelium on Saturday.

Groom predicted Cusick will be the team to beat in the league, along with Selkirk.

WINTHROP – Tonasket got past Liberty Bell, 69-60, in a non-league game Friday.

Liberty Bell is at Omak on Thursday and Tonasket is at Oroville on Friday.

Earlier this season Liberty Bell coach Kyle Acord said, “We have a lot of experience returning from last year’s team. Due to some illness and other issues, we may be a bit short handed during the first couple of weeks. But we should have our full roster available after that.”

COULEE DAM – Justin Rivas scored 20 points and Jim Townsend 17 for Okanogan in its 71-38 win over Lake Roosevelt on Thursday.

Chance Garvin scored 13 points for the Raiders.
