Brewster free throws dunk Chelan

Bridgeport slips past Waterville

— Brewster made its free throws and beat Chelan, 43-30, to open league boys basketball play Tuesday.

The Bears made 16-of-18 charity shots (89 percent) compared to 6-of-16 for Chelan.

“It was not a pretty offensive game by either team, but a strong defensive effort by the Bears,” Brewster coach Tim Taylor said. “We held Chelan to a low shooting percentage. Timbo Taylor hits some big shots down the stretch to ice the game.”

Hank Hollingsworth finished with 16 points, 15 rebounds and 7 blocked shots for Chelan.

Easton Driessen and Timbo Taylor each scored 12 points for Brewster.

Cade Smith had 13 boards.

Brewster (2-1) returns to action at Quincy on Thursday.

BRIDGEPORT – Bridgeport scored in double figures every quarter to put away a stubborn Waterville squad, 56-40, on Tuesday.

“It was a nice way to kick off the regular season,” Bridgeport coach Dan Cavadini said. “The second half the kids clamped down, only allowing 17 points including a three-quarters court shot at the final buzzer by Waterville.”

Bailey Morris-Evenson scored 17 points and Miguel Garza 12 to lead the Mustangs.

Robert Parcells canned 11 points for the Shockers.

Bridgeport (1-0) is at Wilbur-Creston on Tuesday.

PATEROS – Pateros used a strong second half to overcome Liberty Bell, 57-51, on Tuesday.

“My guys really stepped up, especially after being down 10 points (32-22) at the half,” Pateros coach Marcus Stennes said. “Liberty Bell has a really good team. They came out and were hitting shots, grabbing rebounds and we couldn’t do anything to stop them.”

A 19-8 run in the third quarter tied up the game before Pateros won the fourth period, 17-11.

Macen McLean scored 14, Carlos Ceniceros 12 and Julian Median 11 for Pateros, which picked up its first win of the season.

Jaymis Hanson, Logan Szafas and Liam Daily each scored 11 for Liberty Bell.

Liberty Bell (0-2) is at Waterville (0-1) on Tuesday while Pateros (1-2) is at Manson (0-3) on Wednesday.

COULEE CITY – Okanogan devoured Almira/Coulee-Hartline, 79-36, in a non-league game Tuesday.

“We used the ACH game as a chance to play a lot of players,” Okanogan coach Mike Carlquist said. “We split our team in half so we had different players play. Some played in the first and third quarters, while others played in the second and fourth. All 11 players played a whole quarter.”

Justin Rivas scored 22 points (6 assists, 5 steals), Jim Townsend 21 and Justin VanderWeide 11 in two quarters of play for the Bulldogs.

Toby Pruitt and Justin VanderWeide each had 10 rebounds.

Dallas Isaak scored 18 for the Warriors.

A big showdown looms, with Tonasket (3-0) at Okanogan (3-0) for a Caribou Trail League game Tuesday.

OROVILLE – Republic extended a 12-point halftime to a 56-36 non-league victory over Oroville on Tuesday.

“Republic played really well,” Oroville coach Jay Thacker said. “We are going to just keep trying to get better.”

Taylor Campbell scored 13 points, Aaron Fritts 12 and Angelo Rivera 10 for the Tigers.

Juan Lopez sank 13 points for the Hornets.

Oroville (1-1)6 is at Omak (2-1) on Tuesday and Republic (1-1) is at Curlew (2-1) on Tuesday and at Kettle Falls (3-0) on Wednesday.
