LAKE SPANAWAY Ryder Lewis wrapped up his four-year golfing career at Omak High School by placing seventh in the state 1A tournament May 21-22.
Lewis carded a 4-over-par 76 the first day (5 shots off the lead) and 6-over-par 78 the second day for a 154 total at Lake Spanaway Golf Course.
“It’s been a great four-year run,” Omak coach Nick Popelier said of Lewis, who scored the lowest from eastern Washington. “Ryder finished in the top spot from all of eastern Washington. Not too many golfers are in the Top 15 at state all four years, especially from the east side of the state. I think he definitely felt like he could have played better, but still a pretty strong finish.
“He’s looking forward to continuing his golf career at Montana State University in Billings, where he’ll be playing next year.”
Russ Kukula of Ilwaco ran away with the state championship. He carded a leading 71 the first day and a blistering 68 the second day for a 139 total – 8 strokes ahead of second place.
“The (first) day started with 80 boys and 40 girls competing to make the cut,” Popelier said. “The boys are cut down to 40 and girls are cut to 20.”
Josh Olson of Chewelah, who topped Lewis in the District 6/7 golf tournament a week earlier, finished 12th at 157.
Omak’s Cameron Daigneau shot a 93 the first day and did not make the second-day cut (85).
“After weather forecasts of doom and gloom, the (first) day turned out rather nice with just one half-hour cloud burst around 2 p.m.,” Chelan coach Kirk Einspahr said.
On the girls side, Okanogan’s Ana Baum played both days at state to finish 17th (91-99-190).
Vanessa VanderWeide of Okanogan finished at 105 the first day and did not make the second-day cut (93).
Brianna Duff of Omak shot a 119 the first day.
“Ducks of all types were frequently seen on the course today as the heavens opened up and poured rain most of the day,” Einspahr said.
Sam Cooper of Chelan finished seventh in the girls meet (88-84-172).
Quinn Cooper (95) missed the cut by one position (93). Casey Jackson tied for 33rd (103).
Ian Cowell of Chelan tied for 23rd (82-81-163).
“We were hopeful he would come in with an overall score in the 70s where he had been scoring all season long, but unfortunately a combination of weather, puddles and bad breaks had him finishing the back nine with a 42 (39 on front nine),” Einspahr said.
Elijah Larson (89) and Zach Burchett (92) did not make the second day.
