Judd named named Coach of the Year

Vargas, Rivas make first teams

— Okanogan High School football coach Erick Judd was named Coach of the Year in the Caribou Trail League.

Quincy received the sportsmanship award.

Cashmere quarterback Casey Reuther (senior) was named offensive Player of the Year.

Chelan’s Asa Schwartz (senior) was named defensive Player of the Year.

Okanogan’s Enrique Vargas and Justin Rivas were named to first teams on both sides of the ball.

“Both are also a nominees for the all-state game,” Okanogan coach Erick Judd said.

Adrian Urias, Cade Smith and Raul Olvera of Brewster also were on the offense first team.

“Adrian Urias played center for us on the offensive line,” Brewster coach Jake Johanson said. “He was a constant leader and consistently got up to the next level on his blocks.

“Cade Smith made huge improvements from last year to this year,” the coach said. “He finished the season with 47 receptions for 986 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“Raul Olvera has one of the strongest legs around for high school football. He had 9 touchbacks on kickoffs. He hit 25 of 28 extra points and was 2 of 3 for field goals with a long of 32.”

Also on first team defense were Jim Townsend of Okanogan and Michael Orozco of Tonasket.

“Michael Orosco averaged 41.6 yards a punt,” Tonasket coach Jay Hawkins said. “In addition to being an excellent punter, he was always a threat to run fake punt.”

“Jim Townsend also had a great year on the defensive side of the ball leading the team in tackles,” Judd said.

Okanogan, the lone team from the north to reach the state playoffs, graduates seven seniors. Besides Vargas and Rivas there are Arturo Ramos, Fabian Rodriguez, Jason Perez, Cody Sumner and Will English.

“We will have quite a few returning starters including Jim Townsend, T.J. Morris, Brad Nearents, Joe Mintzer, Benny Cate, Gabe Timentwa, Morgan Poulin, Joe Esquivel, Dakota Huff and Gage Cotner,” Judd said. “We will have to work hard in the offseason to continue to compete at the same level as this year. The senior class has done a great job of setting the bar high. I think the underclassman will rise to the challenge.”

Huff, a defensive lineman, was the lone freshman honored on either side of the line. The 6-1, 260-pound tackle was an honorable mention on the defensive line.
