Support sought for annual Shop with a Cop program

Children in need get Christmas help

— The annual Shop with a Cop event is planned for Dec. 21.

The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office is spearheading the event for 25-30 children in need.

Several other police agencies will participate, though the list of participants hasn’t been firmed up yet, Chief Criminal Deputy Dave Rodriguez said.

Deputies are working with the Support Center to coordinate the children who will participate.

The youngsters and police will go bowling at Valley Lanes, 740 Riverside Drive, and have lunch, then go to Walmart, 902 Engh Road, to shop.

“Our budget and number of cops available tend to be the limiting factor, not the number of needy kids,” Rodriguez said.

Donations are being accepted for the project. All proceeds go to the event, including the shopping bill, he said.

Members of the sheriff’s Honor Guard will be at Big R, 1227 Koala Drive, this Saturday and the following Saturday to seek donations.

“Many area businesses helped out last year with donations. Hopefully they will step up again this year,” Rodriguez said.
