Pateros volleyball improves to 8-0

Bridgeport taken to five-set matches

OROVILLE – Pateros, missing its setter and a middle hitter, slipped past Oroville 25-10, 12-25, 25-19 and 25-7 in a non-league match Oct. 5.

“This match was a great test of our ability to adapt and overcome,” Pateros coach Gene Dowers said after his team improved to 8-0.

Setter Katarina Wilson, who is rehabbing an ankle sprain, and outside hitter Madison White, who was at an uncle’s funeral, missed the match.

“The roster was pretty slim,” said Dowers, who brought six players to the match. “Oroville is playing .500 ball, so we had reason for some uncertainty about the outcome of this one.”

Dowers said a fast start led to a letdown in the second set.

“The girls righted the ship in the third set and put it all back together in set four to finish the match with an exclamation point,” the coach said.

Pateros (8-0 overall, 1-0 league) is at Entiat (1-6, 0-0) and Manson (2-4, 0-2) is at Oroville (3-3, 1-1) on Thursday, Oct. 10.

BREWSTER – Chelan topped Brewster 3-0 in a league match Oct. 5.

“Chelan has a very big block, which slowed us down at times,” Brewster coach Marcy Boesel said. “But we battled hard and the girls worked to make the adjustments we asked of them.”

Chelan won 28-26, 25-21 and 25-14.

“Unfortunately, we did get stuck in one rotation in the last set and Chelan was able to run off a string of points for a lopsided score in the third set.”

Cashmere (0-6 overall, 0-6 league) is at Brewster (4-2, 4-2) on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Brewster stats: Brette Boesel 12/12 serving, 2 aces, 14 assists, 8 kills, 5 blocks, 10 digs; Jocelyn Reyes 8/10 serving, 10 digs, strong serve receive; Markie Miller 4 service aces, 13 kills, 4 blocks, 13 digs; Margie Brammer 1 ace, 9 digs, strong serve receive, 2 kills; Kendall Leaver 5/5 serving, 1 block, 4/4 attacking, 1 kill; Bethany Anderson 10/10 serving, 1 ace, 2/2 attacking; Vanessa Terrones 3/3 serving; Sally Romo 4 digs; Whitney Baker 3/4 attacks, 1 block.

Bridgeport (6-2 overall, 3-0 league) gets a week off before heading south to Manson (2-4, 0-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

QUINCY – Omak came out slow but finished off Quincy in four sets Oct. 3.

The Pioneers prevailed 17-25,25-15,25-19 and 25-21.

Omak has won its last three matches while the Jackrabbits have lost four straight.

“We started off slow and gave Quincy too many points off of our own errors,” Omak coach Brittney Richter said. “The girls picked up their level of play toward the end of the first game and carried that momentum into the next few games.

“We really stepped it up on defense and had some pretty good transitions that led us to running some quicker plays at the net.”

Quincy (2-5 overall, 2-4 league) is at Omak (5-2, 5-2) on Thursday, Oct. 10.

The Pioneers are at the Wenatchee Invitational tournament Saturday, Oct. 12.

The Tigers won 26-24, 24-26, 21-25, 25-23 and 15-11.

“There were some great rallies with Entiat,” Oroville coach Cassie Rise said. “Oroville players hit well, and often. But we had some trouble returning Entiat’s hits. We are looking forward to playing them again next week.”

Oroville stats: Brittany Jewett 12 serves; Rachelle Nutt 9 serves, 14 attacks, 9 kills; Nadia Maldonado 8 serves; 12 digs; Mikayla Scott 7 attacks, 7 digs; Andrea Perez 7 attacks, 4 kills; Monica Herrera 7 attacks, 3 kills; Bridget Scott 8 digs.

TONASKET – Chelan swept Tonasket, 3-0, in a Caribou Trail League match Oct. 3.

The Goats won 25-11, 25-10 and 25-12.

“Tonasket put up an adequate fight in our loss to Chelan,” Tonasket coach Jackie Gliddon said. “We had trouble with serve receive and covering middle.

“We’ll get back in the gym tomorrow, lick our wounds and try it again next week.”

Seniors Savannah Clinedinst and Cassie Spear served well, each having an ace, Gliddon said.

Tonasket (0-7 overall, 0-5) goes on a road trip this week against the Top 2 teams in the CTL.

The No. 3 state-ranked 1B Nannies won 17-25, 25-19, 25-15 and 25-23.

The 1B teams in the Central Washington League, which also includes Entiat, play each other twice in non-league matches before matches count in league standings, Pateros coach Gene Dowers said.

“I gave the team a different game plan for this match and it sent the whole thing sideways for a while,” Dowers said. “We pushed the pace too hard in the opening set and gave Waterville 18 points on our own errors.”

Errors went down and the score swung to Pateros side of the scoreboard the next three sets.

“Some really inspiring play by Grace Williams helped change the tone of our game and the defense by EmmaLee and Chloe kept us in it,” coach Dowers said.

Pateros stats: Jessi Dowers 11 kills, 19/23 serves, 2 aces, 8 assists, 7 passes, 9 digs; Chloe Gill 5 kills, 11/14 serves, 2 aces, 11 passes, 21 digs, 1 block; Grace Williams 2 kills, 15/18 serves, 5 aces, 13 passes, 11 digs, 1 block; EmmaLee Luft 1 kill, 1/4 serves, 21 passes, 25 digs; Ashton Steggal 1 kill, 9/9 serves, 1 ace, 1 dig, 1 block; Madison White 3 kills, 7/10 serves, 8 passes, 3 digs, 2 blocks; Brandy Woodward 2 kills, 10/13 serves, 2 aces, 8 assists, 3 passes, 5 digs.
