Deputy may have prevented burglary

— A sheriff’s deputy may have helped avert a burglary or other crime by stopping a suspicious vehicle late Oct. 16.

Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office deputy Justin Weigel spotted the vehicle stopped on Van Duyn Street and contacted the driver. He observed gas cans and suspected burglary tools inside, and the driver had no explanation for why they were there, Chief Criminal Deputy Dave Rodriguez said.

The deputy suspected other people might have been in the area and the driver was waiting for them. He called for a second deputy. The area was searched, but no one was found. There were no reports of break-ins, Rodriguez said.

Weigel “probably interrupted something,” he said. “It was good proactive law enforcement.”
