Okanogan splits at Eastmont

Pateros knocks off Brewster, 13-1

— Okanogan softball split with Eastmont, taking the opener 16-4 and falling in the nightcap 7-1.

“It was fun to see the girls come out and really compete against a 4A school, who is one of the favorites to win the Big 9,” Okanogan coach Darin Radke said. “They had the returning Big 9 MVP in the circle in game one.”

Okanogan needed a couple innings to catch up with the velocity, then started hammering the ball.

Jill Townsend and Keeley Morris each stroked home runs.

“We were able to put the pressure on with timely hitting and good base running,” Radke said. “The second and third time through the lineup, our girls made an adjustment and were able to time the pitcher better. We started to crush the ball.”

Makenzie Norwill notched the victory, striking out 4 and walking 5 in five innings.

Okanogan (16) — Brooklyn Bauer 1-3; Norwill 3-4, 2B; Cameron Moses 1-3; Morris 2-3, HR; Jill Townsend 2-4, HR; Sarah Gray 2-4, 2B; Amanda Erks 1-3.

Okanogan came out flat in the second game.

“We had trouble finding the strike zone early in the count and were always behind hitters,” Radke said. “Against good hitting teams that is tough because now you have to give them a fastball to hit and to Eastmont’s credit they did just that.

“We dug ourselves a hole early and never really got the bats going like in game one. Their pitcher didn’t throw as hard, but had lots of movement and changed speeds nicely. We did battle, but it seemed like every time we hit it hard it was right at a defender. Once we got someone on it seemed like there was always two outs and that took away a lot of the aggressive base running we like to employ.”

Bauer pitched the first five innings, striking out 2 and walking 3 while giving up 6 runs.

Norwill closed the final inning, giving up one run.

Okanogan plays a doubleheader at Northwest Christian on Saturday before returning for league play at Tonasket on April 8.
