GRAND COULEE With scattered lightning and erratic thunderstorms predicted for Eastern Washington this afternoon, the National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for the Grand Coulee, Mansfield and Waterville Plateau areas.
The fire weather watch remains in effect through this evening as thunderstorms with dry lightning and gusty winds are expected, meteorologists said.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop early this afternoon, bringing wind gusts of up to 30 mph to the region, meteorologists said, noting new fire starts from lightning are possible.
A fire weather watch means conditions are right for fire starts.
Should lightning and wind increase, meteorologists said the watch could be upgraded to a red flag warning.
