Red flag warning issued in Okanogan, Methow

— The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Okanogan and Methow valleys, effective until 11 tonight.

Scattered, dry lightning, thunderstorms and wind gusts of 30 mph over the east slopes of the North Cascades can be expected today.

The potential for new lightning-caused fires and growth for current fires, due to high winds, can be expected.

The National Weather Service has also issued a flash flood watch today for Okanogan County in recent burn areas.

According to meteorologists, flash floods could result from afternoon thunderstorms. Flooding is more likely in areas burned in wildfires in recent years.

The watch remains in effect through this evening for Okanogan County, as well as neighboring Chelan County.

Gov. Jay Inslee has extended the burn ban for Eastern Washington through Friday.
