WINTHROP Firefighters are battling a fire burning north of town and about 1.5 miles south of the Pasayten Wilderness.
The Upper Falls Fire is burning in a roadless area with heavy sub-alpine and Douglas fir stands, in steep, rugged terrain. The fire area is southwest of Mount Barney, between Falls and Farewell creeks.
The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team, which has responsibility for the Carlton Complex fire, is responsible for the fire fight on the Upper Falls Fire.
Team operations staff plans to establish an anchor point and develop a plan for suppressing. Structure assessments will be done today, and protection measures put in place, the team said.
As the plan develops, crews will be sent to begin suppression. Helicopters will continue to drop water to check and delay movement to the west and south.
