Apple Education Foundation awards local students

— The Washington Apple Education Foundation has announced a record number of scholarships this year.

Nearly $850,000 was awarded to college-bound young people raised in tree fruit industry families and communities.

Funds were donated by tree fruit growers, packers and suppliers and interested members of the community.

Scholarships range from $500 to four-year, nearly full-ride investments in 185 students.

Local winners include:

Douglas County

Ana Trejo, Northern scholarship, $4,000; Bridgeport High School 2014.

Cristian Garcia, Oneonta/Cooprider scholarship, $3,000; Bridgeport High School, 2014.

Jenipher Contreras, Northern scholarship, $3,000; Bridgeport High School, 2014.

Leticia Lopez, Bill Dewitt Memorial scholarship, $500, and Bob McDougall Memorial scholarship, $2,500; Bridgeport High School, 2014.

Mariela Trejo, CoBank scholarship, $1,500; Northern scholarship, $1,000; Northwest Farm Credit Services scholarship, $1,250; Bridgeport High School, 2012.

Sonia Sanchez, Northern scholarship, $1,000, and Stan and Donna Scheumann scholarship, $1,000; Bridgeport High School, 2012.
