REPUBLIC – The Curlew boys took care of business Tuesday, dispatching Republic, 62-51, in the final basketball game of the regular season.
Republic entered the fray needing to beat the Cougars by 10 points or more to secure the No. 2 seed to district.
The loss dropped the Tigers to No. 4.
Curlew instead finished with the No. 2 seed.
“We played great defense for most of the game,” Republic coach Dan Groom said. “And we played multiple defenses — straight up man, a couple of different zones, we pressed. We executed every defense well. We regularly worked them through 30 seconds of the shot clock, but they would make an amazing shot or we would have a last-second breakdown inside.”
Aaron McCullough (21 points) and Coby Grumbach (15 points) combined for 26 of the Cougars’ 34 first half points. McCullough was 6-for-6 shooting free throws in the first half.
“Curlew shot for a very high percentage in the first half, both from the field and the foul line,” Groom said. “And their shots weren’t just a bunch of lay-ups.”
Curlew extended its 34-22 halftime lead to 51-36 after three quarters.
“We were in foul trouble all game,” Groom said. “Curlew went to the line 27 times. We only shot four free throws. Angelo Rivera and Taylor Campbell both fouled out. Alex Rivera and Garrett Weller each had four fouls at the end of the game.”
Aaron Fritts finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds from his point guard position for Republic.
Weller added 18 points, all scored on 3-pointers.
“It just wasn’t enough tonight,” Groom said. “Too many unforced turnovers. Curlew won the majority of 50-50 balls, which is a testament to their hustle.”
The loss broke a three-game win streak for Republic (9-10 overall, 7-5 league), which opens district at south champion Odessa-Harrington (14-6) on Tuesday.
