Tribe honors first breastfed baby

— Colville Tribal Health is honoring Nathanial Marcus Hamilton Jr. as the year’s first fully breastfed baby.

The baby, born Jan. 2 at Mid-Valley Hospital in Omak, is the son of Irene Monaghan and Nathan Hamilton of Omak.

Breastfeeding Peer Mentor Jessica Valenzuela said Hamilton won a reservation-wide contest because his mother was the first to enroll a breastfed baby in the Women, Infants, Children supplemental food program for low-income families.

The tribe offers the Women, Infants, Children program at its clinics in Grand Coulee, Inchelium, Keller, Nespelem and Omak.

Prizes included a haircut for the mom, tea, a beaded purse, blanket and other baby products.

Women, Infants, Children is a nutrition program for pregnant women, new and breastfeeding moms, and children under 5.

It provides monthly checks for healthy food, health screenings and referrals, nutrition education and breastfeeding support.
