Selkirk edges Curlew in 2 OTs

— Brewster clamped down on defense to knock off Quincy, 56-35, in a Caribou Trail League boys basketball game Saturday.

“We played good team defense,” Brewster coach Tim Taylor said. “We were able to get the ball inside to Josh Hammons and he converted.”

Hammons finished with 21 points and 9 rebounds.

“Everybody played and contributed,” Taylor said. “It was a good team effort.”

Cascade (2-12 overall, 1-7 league) is at second-place Brewster (11-3, 7-1) on Friday.

SELKIRK – Selkirk eked out a 63-62 double overtime win over Curlew on Saturday.

Selkirk’s Shawn Mailly (23 points) hit a 3-pointer to send the game into the first overtime.

The Rangers’ Jacob Couch (17 points) hit a pair of free throws to set up the second overtime.

Brandyn Ross made one of two free throws for the final margin.

Curlew was not able to get a late shot.

Coby Grumbach scored 14 points and Gunner Brown 13 for Curlew.

Inchelium (8-2) is at Curlew (7-5, 5-2) on Friday. The Cougars are at Cusick (12-2) on Saturday.

OMAK – Cashmere bit Omak, 78-35, in a league game Saturday.

“They outplayed us in every aspect of the game,” Omak coach Kyle Desautel said.

Leighton Boyd scored 10 points for the Pioneers.

REPUBLIC – Cusick got a fast start in beating Republic, 63-35, on Saturday.

The Panthers sprang to a 42-12 lead by halftime.

Aaron Fritts finished with 10 points (all in the second half) for Republic, which did not make a field goal in the second quarter.

Republic (6-8 overall, 4-4 league) is at Columbia (3-13) at Hunters on Friday and returns home for Selkirk (8-8) on Saturday.

CHELAN – Tonasket could not dig out of an early hole in falling 48-38 to Chelan on Friday.

The Tigers trailed 31-14 at the half before winning the final two quarters, 24-17.

Michael Orozco and Dyllan Gage each scored 12 points for Tonasket.

OKANOGAN – Jim Townsend exploded for 33 points for Okanogan, which pounded Cascade, 73-35, on Friday.

The No. 1 state-ranked Bulldogs point guard, Justin Rivas, went down hard on a knee in the second quarter.

He returned for the third quarter before the Bulldogs sat its starters in the fourth.

“We played pretty well, especially the first half,” said Okanogan coach Mike Carlquist, whose team led 43-8 at the half.

“They did not shoot very well,” he said. “I got a chance to play a lot of our other kids in the fourth quarter.”

Quincy (7-7 overall, 2-6 league) is at Okanogan (14-0, 8-0) on Friday.

REPUBLIC – Republic sped past Inchelium, 69-47, in a Northeast 1B-north division game Friday.

Inchelium led 21-19 after the first quarter before Republic went on a 17-5 run in the second quarter.

The Tigers put the game away with a 6-0 run at the start of the third period.

Aaron Fritts finished with 19 points, 6 steals and 6 assists for Republic, which pulled into fourth place and the final district playoff berth.

Garrett Weller added 11 points and Kodie McQuay produced 10 points and 8 rebounds for the Tigers.

Quentin Holford scored 13 points, Edward Stensgar had 13 and Quentin Holford 10 for Inchelium.

CURLEW – Curlew opened a 23-4 first quarter lead before cruising to a 67-25 win over Northport on Friday.

Aaron McCullough and Daniel Tresham each finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Curlew.

BRIDGEPORT – Bridgeport took a close 49-44 win over Oroville on Thursday.

Bridgeport led 24-22 at the half and had as much as a nine-point lead in the game.

“Free throws got us through,” Bridgeport coach Dan Cavadini said of his team making 13 of 17 free throws.

Johnny Espinobarros (6 points) was 4 for 4 in the final seconds to seal the victory.

“They just kept making big shots,” Cavadini said. “We could never get on a roll offensively.”

Manson (0-11 overall, 0-3 league) is at Bridgeport (4-7, 1-2) on Thursday.

Oroville (2-10, 0-3) is at Lake Roosevelt (4-5, 1-1) on Friday.
