Burned employee out of the hospital

Dan McCulloch injured in fire at Grand Coulee Dam

— A Grand Coulee Dam worker injured in a Nov. 18, 2013, fire was released from the hospital last week.

The fire at the John W. Keys III Pump Generating Plant damaged the plant and injured Dan McCulloch, 53, who received burns. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is working to get the plant operating in time for the 2014 irrigation season. Repairs are under way, and all pumps are expected to be operational by Feb. 7.

A temporary clean-up crew began work Dec. 9. The cost of repairs has not been determined, but costs incurred as of late last week totaled $870,000.

Another worker, Electric City resident Thomas Leitner, 54, was treated at Coulee Medical Center and released the day of the fire.

The fire apparently was caused by a failure in the switch gear in the plant. The agency’s Denver office is investigating.
