Republic sweeps Northeast 1B boys teams

Defense powers Tigers to victories

— Republic made it a clean sweep last weekend by dousing Selkirk, 54-45, in a league boys basketball game Saturday.

“Wow, what a game,” Republic coach Dan Groom said. “And we had to have it. We played the hardest, smartest defense we’ve played all season.”

Defense powered the Tigers to an 18-6 first quarter lead.

“It was the first time we finally beat a team with superior height,” Groom said, noting the Tigers’ tallest player is 6-1.

Aaron Fritts (6-0) took on a player four inches taller and Alex Rivera (6-0) went against a player six inches taller, the coach said.

Curlew (8-6 overall, 6-3 league) finishes the season at Republic on Tuesday.

“If we win, we force a 3-way tie with us, Curlew, and Selkirk,” Groom said. “Lose and we are in fourth place (last berth to district). I’m so proud of my guys.”

Taylor Campbell scored 12 points and Alex Rivera 13 points for Republic.

Northport (1-15 overall, 1-9 league) is at Republic (8-9, 6-4) on Friday.

SOAP LAKE – Soap Lake boys pounded Pateros, 60-31, in non-league basketball action Saturday.

“We had a tough one down there,” Pateros coach Marcus Stennes said. “They are the top team in the south and they came out and showed us.”

Soap Lake (14-1 overall, 7-0 league) is at Pateros (8-4, 2-1) on Friday.

CUSICK – Cusick ran away from Curlew, 69-56, Saturday.

The Panthers leaped to a 27-6 first quarter lead only to see the Cougars roar back with a 25-12 second quarter and trail 39-31 at the half.

Aaron McCullough scored 16 points for Curlew, which also got 14 points from Coby Grumbach and 13 points from Daniel Tresham.

Kettle Falls (6-10) is at Curlew (8-6 overall, 6-3 league) for a non-league game Friday.

The Cougars go to Columbia (2-15, 1-9) in Hunters on Saturday and finish the regular season at Republic (8-9, 6-4) on Tuesday.

YAKIMA — Riverside Christian dominated play for the first three quarters in beating Bridgeport, 52-30, on Saturday.

Bailey Morris-Evenson scored 8 points for Bridgeport.

OKANOGAN – No. 1 state-ranked Okanogan led by seven at the half before winning 69-38 over Quincy on Friday.

Jason Perez scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half.

Justin Rivas finished with 21 points and 9 assists.

Okanogan (16-0 overall, 10-0 league) is at Cashmere (11-5, 7-3) on Saturday then returns home for No. 8 Brewster (13-3, 9-1) on Tuesday.

Tristan Seymour scored 15 points to pace Inchelium.

Inchelium (3-7 overall, 3-5 league) is at Selkirk (8-9, 6-3) on Friday before coming home for Cusick (15-2, 9-0) on Saturday.

The Hornets wrap up their season hosting Northport (1-15, 1-9) on Tuesday.
