ENTIAT Residents are being evacuated and firefighters from local, state and federal agencies are battling a 500-acre fire about four miles west of town.
The Mills Canyon Fire has prompted evacuation warnings from the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office for Mills Canyon and Entiat River Road.
Those in Mills Canyon received Level 3 warnings – the highest of three – and residents of Entiat River Road from milepost 1.5 to the upper end are getting Level 1 warnings.
Under Level 3, people are warned of an immediate threat to life and property.
As of 1:30 p.m., firefighters from the state Department of Natural Resources, Chelan County fire districts and U.S. Forest Service were responding.
An air tanker from Moses Lake, a heavy helicopter and a medium helicopter have been dispatched to the fire to assist ground forces.
The fire started Tuesday afternoon around 12:20 p.m. and is burning in grass and brush in very steep terrain. The fire’s cause is under investigation.
