Highland Fire '100 percent' contained

— Fire crews finished mop-up operations Thursday evening on the Highland Fire about six miles east of town along state Highway 174.

The blaze is 100 percent contained, fire officials said.

On Friday morning, a small grass fire was reported in the fire area, but two strike teams still on the scene responded with Douglas County Fire District No. 3 to douse the blaze. Crews stayed on the scene and competed a second mop-up that morning.

The fire began at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. State mobilization was authorized, allowing crews to be deployed from around the state.

The Spokane County Incident Management Team assumed command at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

No structures were damaged. The fire burned 492 acres of grass and brush.

During the fire fight, Douglas County firefighters also responded to a small fire on state Highway 174. It was contained at 37 acres.

All road closures and evacuations have been canceled.
