Red Cross, Baptists to serve meals in fire areas

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief and American Red Cross will be supplying meals daily to Okanogan County residents of fire-damaged areas without electricity starting Sunday.

Meals will be prepared at Chelan High School and ultimately transported to Pateros, Methow, Carlton, Winthrop and Mazama for distribution.

“The mission is to get food to and from Pateros and other places,” Okanogan Emergency Operations Center spokeswoman Linda Pierce said Saturday.

Officials said 1,000 meals will be prepared for each breakfast, lunch and dinner. The number of meals at each location will correspond to the local population.

“Our volunteers are trained in food preparation,” Southern Baptists spokesman Paul Henry said.

On Sunday, breakfasts will be available beginning about 8:30 a.m., depending on traffic and fire safety. Lunches will be available beginning at about 1 p.m. and dinner starting at 6 p.m.

Since Twisp is currently under a Level 2 evacuation notice, the Red Cross is not allowed to distribute meals in that community. Twisp-area residents should go to Winthrop for meals.

Meals will be available at:

  • Pateros – City Hall, 113 Lakeshore Drive
  • Methow – Fire station, 32 Main St.
  • Carlton – Church, next to Carlton RV at 2252 state Highway 153
  • Winthrop -- The Winthrop Barn, 51 N. Highway 20
  • Mazama – Mazama store, 50 Lost River Road
