Pilot killed in Banks Lake crash

— Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration are continuing to investigate a plane crash that killed a Monroe man Saturday south of town.

Kenneth A. Berger died when his amphibious plane crashed into Banks Lake near Steamboat Rock State Park.

Berger, 60, was alone in the Searay amphibious plane and attempting to take off around 5 p.m. Witnesses said the plane went into the water nose first and sank, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said.

People in nearby boats dove into the lake and released Berger’s seatbelt, brought him to the surface and then to a waiting ambulance on shore, officials said. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Grant County Coroner’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Kyle Foreman said the investigation has been turned over to the FAA.
