INCHELIUM Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers rode a tremendous financial advantage to an almost 20-point victory in the race for the 5th Congressional District seat Tuesday over Democratic challenger Joseph "Joe" Pakootas.
Neither McMorris Rodgers nor Pakootas could be reached for comment.
As of 8:35 p.m., the initial vote count showed McMorris Rodgers with a district wide tally of 80,846 votes, or 59.5 percent, and Pakootas with 55,022 votes, or 40.5 percent.
Whitman County had yet to report.
McMorris Rodgers, a 45-year-old Spokane Republican, entered the election Tuesday with more than $1.21 million in political action committee funds and $1.2 million in other donations funding her re-election campaign .
Pakootas, a Democrat from Inchelium, raised only $158,000 in total in his effort to unseat the darling of the Republican party.
In Ferry County, McMorris Rodgers took 1,546 votes, or 57.8 percent, to Pakootas' 1,128 votes. In neighboring Stevens County, McMorris Rodgers grabbed 62.2 percent, or 4,651 votes, to Pakootas' 2,827 votes.
The district does not include Okanogan County.
