OMAK Our children often complain that there’s “nothing to do” here in the Okanogan. This week, they couldn’t be more wrong as the annual Okanogan County Fair takes place.
The fair runs from Thursday through Sunday, and it still offers a safe place for children to share good times with family and friends. At the same time, the fair celebrates our agricultural roots here in North-Central Washington.
There will be food, music, a midway, animals, vendors, racing and much more. Alcohol is not allowed on the fairgrounds this year, and neither is recreational marijuana. Entertainment is family oriented and many 4-H displays are educational.
And with only one or two ways in and out of the fairgrounds, parents can rest assured their children will be safe celebrating and enjoying some old-fashioned fun.
Schools also recognized the value of the county fair. And on Thursday, hundreds of school children will flood the fairgrounds to learn about animals and rural lifestyles.
Children’s activities take place throughout the event. Events planned include a dunk tank, three-legged races, a slick pig contest, a bouncy house, mutton bustin’ and more.
The fair is great place to support our area’s youth. Youngsters have raised animals for show. They’ve spent hours and hours creating 4-H projects. They’ve painted, photographed, built, baked and planted. Take time to wander the fairgrounds buildings and learn from our youth.
The fair also offers adults an opportunity to connect with each other and reminisce about the “old days.” While children are taking in their events, parents will find ample space to enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage, talk with old friends and escape the hectic world outside the fairgrounds.
While there aren’t any big celebrities entertaining at this year’s fair, there are plenty of options to take in. There will be horse racing, a truck and tractor pull, music from Barry Black and even Low Rider Racing. There is also a silent auction planned to benefit Carlton Complex wildfire victims.
With so much going on, we’re sure you won’t want to miss this year’s Okanogan County Fair.
