Quilt guild honors veteran

— The Columbia River Quilt Guild honored local veteran Dan Ewing at SweetRiver Bakery during the Pateros Apple Pie Jamboree on Aug. 9.

Guild members Brenda Brady, Karen Willette and Joyce Smith presented Ewing with a quilt.

He served in the Army National Guard from 1991-99, and received several medals, including “Soldier of the Year.”

Standing up with him were the color guard and veterans from the Brewster American Legion, Patriot Guard Riders, Samaritan Riders, Combat Veterans Association, American Legion Riders and Team Rubicon. The latter includes many who veterans who have been in Paters assisting with disaster relief.

The Columbia River Quilt Guild has been making quilts to present to local area veterans as a way of saying thanks for their service to the country.

“We want to wrap these veterans up in our heartfelt appreciation,” spokeswoman Lisa Schluneger said.

Guild members make quilt blocks from their own fabric “stash” and from donated material, then combine the blocks into quilts for veterans.

The guild is seeking veterans in the Pateros, Brewster, Bridgeport or Mansfield areas as quilt recipients.
