Train, orchard vehicle collide near Monse

— An orchard worker was not injured Thursday morning when the bin carrier he was drive collided with a train.

Luis E. Lopez, 39, of Brewster, was southbound on Monse River Road around 8:19 a.m. when his vehicle, loaded with four bins of apples, was struck in the front by a northbound train.

Lopez was working at a nearby Gebbers Farms orchard and hauling the bins to a pickup area across the tracks.

The crossing is about a half-mile south of the Monse River Road and Old Highway 97 intersection.

The Washington State Patrol, Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, fire departments from Brewster, Monse and Okanogan, and Cascade and Columbia River Railroad officials responded to the scene.
