New fire starts in Yaksum Canyon

— Lightning from this morning's thunderstorm has ignited a new wildfire.

Chelan County fire officials said late today that the new Yaksum Canyon Fire has already grown to 30-plus acres in timber, sagebrush and grasses.

The fire is burning four miles south of town. Initially reported on state Department of Natural Resources land, the blaze has spread to the Wenatchee River District of Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, officials said.

Winds are pushing the fire into timber and multiple fire crews have been assigned to the blaze, officials said. Smokejumpers and helitack teams have also been mobilized.

Officials say there are not any structures in danger, yet.
