— Power remains out to 9,000 homes and businesses in Chelan and the surrounding area as the utility district repairs power lines.

Fire knocked out poles, lines and other equipment in many areas, including Chelan Butte and the south shore of Lake Chelan, Chelan County Public Utility District spokeswoman Suzanne Hartman said.

"The PUD will work quickly to restore power as soon as it is safe and the fire situation is fully understood," she said. "The areas that will be re-energized first will be where no damage to power equipment occurred. That includes the central downtown (Chelan) area and north shore of Lake Chelan."

Meanwhile, U.S. Highway 97 has reopened from Pateros to Orondo. But telephone service remains out in the Brewster and Pateros areas.

Because of increasing wildfires, a new fire camp has been set up at Beebe Bridge Park. That camp joins a camp previously set up at Chelan Falls Park.

The utility plans to provide a status update at 6 p.m.
