Fire danger level lowered in Douglas County

— Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal is reducing the fire evacuation notice levels everywhere in Douglas County except McNeil Canyon.

"The only Level 3 notice (meaning evacuate immediately) in effect is for McNeil Canyon," he said about 8:15 p.m. today. "Firefighters are still doing active structure protection in that area."

Wildfire warnings had been issued for most of the northwest part of the county from McNeil Canyon to Mansfield to the Bridgeport area.

The warning followed the Breach Complex Fire's jump from Chelan County over the Columbia River into Douglas County last week.

"Everything north of Road 20 and west of Central Ferry Road has been lowered to a Level 2," Gjesdal said, noting that means residents should be prepared to evacuate if the fire changed directions. "Bridgeport and the Bridgeport Bar have been lowered to a Level 1."

Gjesdal said McNeil Canyon Road remains closed from U.S. Highway 97 to Road E Northwest.

"Douglas County Deputies will be patrolling the McNeil Canyon area due to damaged road structures and to prevent unauthorized access," he said.

According to Gjesdal, power has been restored to fire-damaged areas, but telephone service remains sketchy.

"This fire complex has proven to be unpredictable and citizens are reminded to be vigilant and report any new fire activity," he said.
