NESPELEM – Several areas near town are under evacuation notices, with some at Level 3 (highest) because of the North Star Fire.
The fire, which had been burning northward, changed directions and threatened the town Tuesday night.
Level 3 evacuation notices have been issued for Haden Creek to Lyman Lake/Moses Meadows Road to the Colville Indian Reservation boundary and north to West Fork Highway, North Gold Lake Road to Stepstone Road North, north of Old HUD (not including the housing area) to Schillings Ranch at Gold Lake Road, state Highway 155 from milepost 46 (1.5 miles north of Nespelem) to Jackson’s Ranch and east of the town limits, including all of Owhi Flats.
Level 2 (be ready) notices have been issued for the town east on Cache Creek Road to BIA Route 13 (Agency Cutoff Road), state Highway 155 from milepost 50 (a mile south of Great Western summit) to milepost 65 at Lyman Lake/Moses Meadows Road, the town to four corners junction at the Colville Indian Agency, and old and new HUD housing in town.
Level 1 (lowest) notices are in place for the intersection of Cache Creek Road (gravel pit) and BIA Route 13 (Agency Cutoff Road) southward and the four corners junction at the Colville Indian Agency southward.
An evacuation shelter is at Lake Roosevelt High School, 505 Crest Drive, Coulee Dam.
Livestock can be taken to the Okanogan County Fairgrounds, 175 Rodeo Trail Road, Okanogan.
