Zajac's family releases video in wake of his death

— The family of a local fireman killed last week in the Okanogan Complex fires has released a video statement reacting his death.

Andrew Zajac, 26, of Winthrop, Tom Zbyszewski, 20, of Walla Walla, and Richard Wheeler, 31, of South Haven, Mich., died Aug. 19 in the Twisp River Fire. Another fireman, Daniel Lyon, 25, of Puyallup, remains hospitalized in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Three other fire fighters were treated and released for injuries.

The seven fire fighters were in a vehicle that crashed and was overtaken by the wildfire, officials said.

In the video are, on the couch left to right, William Zajac (brother), James Zajac (father), Mary Zajac (mother), Jennifer Zajac (Andrew's wife) and Lynette Brown (Jennifer’s mom); floor left to right, Bart Brown (Jennifer’s brother) and Loretta Brown (Jennifer’s sister).

The Browns are from Silver City, New Mexico and the Zajacs are originally from Downers Grove, Ill.

The family is asking that memorial donations in Andrew's name be made to Aero Methow Rescue Service, Methow Conservancy or Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
