REPUBLIC – Ferry County Commissioners decided yesterday to cancel the 79th annual Ferry County Fair, originally slated for Labor Day weekend, because of wildfires burning in and around the county.
“There are plans being made for market sale animals, however, the fire and community safety issues are our top priority,” officials from the Ferry County Sheriff’s Office said Monday afternoon.
Organizers of the fair say they plan to host a market sale within the coming weeks, but additional details are not yet available.
The fairgrounds is being used to house evacuated animals.
Meanwhile at the Okanogan County Fairgrounds, hundreds of firefighters have established a fire camp throughout the grounds.
A workday for volunteer superintendents planned for last weekend was canceled.
County commissioners say they and the Fair Advisory Committee plan to go ahead with the Sept. 10-13 event.
