Bird count set for Saturday

The annual Christmas Bird Count by the Audubon Society will be Saturday, starting in Okanogan. Volunteers will meet at 6:45 a.m. at 2050 James Ave. and will leave at 7 a.m. Full- and partial-day participants are welcome, organizer Heather Findlay said.

Anyone in Okanogan and Ferry counties can tell you that wildfires were the big story in 2015. Nearly every community felt the singe of wildfire — whether the flames, dense smoke that caused numerous health issues or loss of tourism revenues — the 2015 fire season was the worst in recorded history. More than a million acres burned statewide – half of them in Okanogan County alone.
