Red flag warning calls for 'critical fire weather'

— The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning calling for the Okanogan and Methow Valley calling for "critical fire weather" conditions.

“Gust winds ahead of a Saturday frontal passage will combine with a dry air mass to produce a potentially dangerous wildfire environment Friday,” meteorologist said.

The warning is in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Northerly winds are expected to be between 15 to 25 mph with gusts upward of 30-40 mph.

“Rapid fire spread is possible with existing fire or new fire starts in the area,” the service said. “A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperature will create extreme fire growth potential.”

The warning comes at the heels of a heat advisory issued earlier this week, which blankets most of Okanogan County.
