Four killed in crash west of Davenport

— Four Okanogan County residents were killed Wednesday evening in a head-on crash with a tractor-trailer nine miles west of the city.

The Washington State Patrol identified the fatal crash victims as George Friedlander, 68, of Nespelem; Jake B. Walter, 28, of Omak; Georgina Walter, 32, of Omak; and 5-month-old Logan Walter, of Omak.

The driver of the truck, Gerard F. Kane, 57, of Clayton, sustained minor inujuries, the state patrol said. But details of his injuries or the hospital he was taken to were not immediately available.

A special investigative unit has been called to investigate the crash near the Teleford rest area in rural Lincoln County.

A preliminary crash report said that Jake Walter was driving his 1999 Chrysler 300 westbound on U.S. Highway 2 when he failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the centerline and slammed head-on into the tractor trailer at about 5:45 p.m.

Walter and his three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol reported.

Kane was taken to an undisclosed hospital and his 2001 Kenworth and 1998 Beale trailer were towed from the scene by Rouse's Valley Towing, the patrol said.

The state patrol said it has yet to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

The preliminary report says all of the crash victims were wearing seatbelts, except the infant.

U.S. Highway 2 was closed to all traffic from the time of the crash until about 3 a.m. today.

Meanwhile, the patrol is investigating a rollover crash that blocked U.S. Highway 2 about two miles west of Wilbur.

The crash occurred about 6:22 a.m., the patrol said.

Details of that crash were not immediately available.
