OKANOGAN The Okanogan County Public Utility District is warning customers of a scam involving a pop-up computer message.
The message, purportedly from the utility district, “warns” users that their Firefox browser and PC “may have critical security vulnerabilities.” The message instructs users to call a toll-free number for “immediate assistance.”
The utility said it did not send the message and the phone number will not connect to the utility district.
“The PUD would never send an automated pop-up like this to your personal computer,” the utility said.
Customers can call the utility at 509-422-3310 to verify the status of their accounts.
Suspicious calls or emails can be reported to the Washington State Attorney General’s Office or the Federal Trade Commission.
