REPUBLIC The Thirteen Mile and Hall Creek areas of the Colville National Forest's Republic Ranger District have reopened.
The area is east of state Highway 21 and south of state Highway 20.
Forest officials said the opening means hikers and others can visit Kettle Crest and Snow Peak Shelter areas there. But the Kettle Crest north of Highway 20 to the Canadian border remains closed.
Officials said the Swan, Ferry and Long Lake campgrounds also remain closed as fire hazards are assessed.
“It is my intent to reopen access to public lands as soon as it is safe to do so,” Acting Forest Supervisor Rodney Smoldon said. “Each day, we evaluate whether the risks to firefighters and the public have been removed or mitigated. As conditions change, we will modify the closures accordingly.”
Some areas may remain closed through the winter, he said.
