“Budding herpetologists" received second place in the Best Breaking News Photo category.

OMAK - Several current and former Chronicle staff and a contributor received awards from the National Newspaper Association for the group’s Better Newspaper contest.
The group received 1,436 entries for the contest from newspapers in 39 states.
Chronicle artist Brad Skiff received accolades with a third place finish in the Editorial Cartoon category, which pitted art from all categories, including daily newspapers and all weeklies, for his cartoon titled “FEMA Response.”
Former Chronicle publisher Roger Harnack received a first place win in Best Editorial, with his editorial “Reverse disaster director decision.” The editorial called for returning Emergency Management back to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office.
Harnack and Chronicle reporter Brock Hires shared third place in the Best Feature Story category for “‘Bearytale’ unfolds at Esther Bricques,” a story about the adventures of a mother bear and her three cubs.
Chronicle reporter Dee Camp received third place for Best Breaking News Story for “Okanogan County still in line of fire.”
Chronicle managing editor Chris Thew received a second place finish in Best Breaking News Photo for “Budding herpetologists,” an honorable mention in Best Feature Photo for “Fair takes county by the horns” and an honorable mention in Best Sports Photo with “Oroville upends White Swan.”
