Coulee City fire contained

— A fire that blackened more than 3,200 acres of land southwest of town was contained Oct. 1.

The Whitehall Fire started around 11:30 a.m. Sept. 30 eight miles southwest of Coulee City. Firefighters from several jurisdictions responded to the wind-driven blaze, which threatened homes, crops and electrical lines. State fire mobilization was authorized at 3:45 p.m. that day.

Southeast Washington Type 3 incident management team No. 2 assumed command at 10 p.m.

“Firefighters did an excellent job yesterday securing the remaining containment lines and extinguishing any hot spots,” said Jeff Sevigney, Washington State Patrol spokesman. “There was minimal fire activity and crews were able to complete all of their objectives.”

No primary structures were lost. No injuries were reported.

Command has been returned to local firefighters.

The fire burned 3,270 acres of grass, sage and range land.
