TONASKET — A celebration of life was held for Kale Arron Holbert Saturday at Bonaparte Lake.
The 5-year-old died in a car accident Sunday, Sept. 23., near town. He was a pedestrian.
Saturday’s celebration included a barbecue potluck and fishing, with attendees invited to bring their fishing poles and “catch a fish for Kale,” as fishing was his “favorite thing to do.”
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to assist Kale’s mother, Alyssa Holbert, with funeral expenses and other costs at www.gofundme.com/eg56rngk.
Additionally, a bank account has been opened in Holbert’s name at U.S. Bank in Tonasket for those who wish to assist.
Kale Holbert was a kindergarten student at Tonasket Elementary School.
“There are kids throughout the whole (school) system that have been impacted by this,” said Tonasket School District Superintendent Steve McCullough.
A grief counselor and crisis intervention team have been at the school for parents, teachers and students.
A revolving substitute teacher has also been available for teachers needing to take time off to grieve.
McCullough sent out a letter Sept. 24 encouraging parents to feel free to use the school’s resources, including the school psychologist and counselors.
“We are all deeply saddened by the loss and will make every effort to help you, your child, and our community through this tragic event,” McCullough said in the letter.
