South winds are pushing smoke from the Domke Lake Complex Fire near Lake Chelan northward into Okanogan County, according to Dave Hilton, environmental health director with Okanogan County Public Health.
Individuals most sensitive or susceptible to airborne particulates - infants and young children, the elderly, pregnant women, diabetics or those with pre-existing lung and cardiovascular conditions - may experience considerable discomfort, according to Hilton's announcement.
"Continuing south winds may cause smoke levels to worsen over the next 24 hours," he said.
To alleviate or mitigate some of the smoke's effects, health officials advise people:
- Stay indoors with the windows closed.
- Use recycle or re-circulate on vehicle air conditioners.
- During hot weather, people who do not have air conditioning should consider visiting a place that does, such as a friend or relative's home, or a public library.
- Don't smoke and try to avoid physical exertion.
- Contact a health care provider if experiencing symptoms of cardiovascular or lung problems.
Those who cannot reach a health care provider are advised to call 911, according to the health office.
