Brewster boys finish seventh at state 1A tournament
Brewster's high school boys' basketball team finished seventh in state after falling 54-49 to Connell Saturday, March 1, at the Yakima SunDome.
The Bears trailed by as much as eight points before Cole Youngers (11 points, 10 rebounds) made two free throws for a 36-34 Brewster lead with 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Connell made a three pointer and another hoop to close the quarter up 39-36.
Wade Gebbers stole the ball and got a layup to cut the margin to 39-38 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Brewster would tie the game at 41-all on a long two-pointer by Bryce Scheller (13 points).
After falling behind by five, Brewster strips the ball with Youngers recovering the loose ball. Scheller took a pass from Youngers and sank a three-pointer with 3:05 to go to cut the lead to 47-45.
Connell hung onto the ball, running time off the clock then made four free throws in the final 21 seconds to seal the victory.
Scheller made a final basket as time ran out.
Brewster has reached state the last 10 years (brought home nine trophies). During that stretch the Bears played in the state finals five times and won championships three times (2003, 2004, 2007).
