Rory Gilliland, the Colville Confederated Tribes' contracted police chief and acting executive director and interim director of public safety, will be taking a new job next month.
Gilliland said he resigned at the end of February, giving the tribe 30-day notice that he was going to the Spokane Tribes to be its new police chief while creating a police department there.
His last day of work will be March 28.
Gilliland was contracted as Colville Tribal Police chief until Sept. 30. His position of interim public safety director had been extended 90 days to end the first week of May.
"Spokane Tribes made me an offer," said Gilliland, 54. "I have an opportunity to create a police department for Spokane Tribes. BIA currently is there. They are going to contract their own police department.
"It's a neat opportunity," Gilliland said. "I am excited with working with Spokane Tribes."
Gilliland has been in law enforcement for 33 years. He is a member of the Delaware tribe in Oklahoma, and retired from the sheriff's office in Olympia before signing with the Colville tribes in December of 2000.
