Shelly Short, who has served as senior Legislative Assistant for Rep. Joel Kretz, R-Wauconda, has officially announced her candidacy for the state Legislature for the 7th District, position one.
The incumbent, Bob Sump, announced that he would not seek another term and has decided to retire to another calling as a pastor in his hometown of Republic.
"I'm humbled by the tremendous encouragement I've received from citizens and community leaders all across the district to run for the seat Rep. Bob Sump is leaving," said Short. "For the past 14 years, I've been the person folks come to for help. People know my work ethic, knowledge of issues and track record in getting things done."
Short also has the privilege of receiving the endorsement of Sump.
"Shelly knows the ropes," said Sump. "She will be an effective state representative from day one."
Before working with Kretz, Short managed district offices for 14 years for U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-5th District, and former U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt, R-5th District.
Short has worked extensively on regulatory issues at the state and federal levels, especially those affecting small business, private property, agriculture, water, timber, forest health and wildfire fighting, economic development, power generation, and recreation.
Short said she has extensive experience helping citizens navigate federal and state government, which she feels is crucial to effectively representing the Seventh District in Olympia.
"My experience will allow me to hit the ground running," said Short.
Short is joining a large field of Republican candidates who already have announced their campaigns, including Sue Lani Madsen, Edwall; Peter Davenport, Harrington; and Kelly White, Kettle Falls.
