Temporary traffic signals are in place on Highway 153 at the Methow River bridges at mileposts 3 and 10, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The signals are part of a 13-mile project to revamp bridges on the highway between milepost 3 and milepost 16.
The signals will help direct traffic over the bridges as crews grind off the existing pavement, install concrete barriers to protect the work zone and remove baluster rails from the bridges, according to the DOT. A 10-foot-wide load restriction is in effect.
The two-season project will repair five bridges.
The bridge deck surfaces, rails and sidewalks are deteriorated and will be repaired and re-paved, according to the DOT. Sidewalks on the bridge at milepost 14 were retrofitted with new supports last summer; sidewalks on the milepost 10 bridge will be retrofitted this summer.
Contractor is MRM.
Work also began last week on crack sealing projects throughout north central Washington, according to the DOT announcement.
Motorists can expect short delays with single-lane, alternating, flagger-controlled traffic where crews are working, say DOT officials.
In northern Douglas County, a crew will finish crack-sealing (injecting rubberized sealant into pavement cracks) on Highway 17 from Leahy Junction to Brewster and then move up to Okanogan County on Highway 20 from Aeneas Valley to Wauconda summit, the announcement continued.
In Grant and Adams counties, another crew will finish pre-leveling (hot mix asphalt patching) on Highway 17 between Othello and Moses Lake, and then move up Highway 17 between Coulee City and Leahy Junction in Douglas County.
A third crew will remove plastic pavement markings on Highway 207 in Chelan County in preparation for pre-level patching and chip sealing later in May.
In the $5.1 million project, Central Washington Asphalt Inc. is chip sealing 128 miles of pavement on seven state highways in Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Adams and Okanogan counties. Work began April 14 and should be complete in mid-July, according to DOT officials.
