U.S. Forest Service crews are battling a 10-acre fire near the War Creek Trail near Stehekin, according to Mark Pepin of the Okanogan Valley office of the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests.
It’s unknown whether the fire started the night of July 22 or early July 23; cause of the fire is still under investigation, Pepin said.
He said a 20-person crew, seven smokejumpers and a helicopter are working on the fire.
No structures are threatened, Pepin said.
The trail, part of which overlooks Lake Chelan as part of the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, is closed from the trailhead at Twisp River to the summit on Chelan-Sawtooth Ridge where it intersections with National Park Service Trail No. 1259.
The fire is burning in an area with steep slopes that is heavily timbered with both standing dead and down fuels, said Shannon O’Brien of the Forest Service.
