How tiny Conconully survived through mining boom and bust, fire, flood, and loss of status as county seat and became a popular tourist destination will be explored during the community's annual Miners' Days celebration Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1-2, according to an announcement from the Conconully Area Historical Association and Museum.
Beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, a yard sale takes place on the grounds of the Conconully Museum. Proceeds from the project, held in conjunction with the town's annual community-wide yard sales, will be used to maintain and preserve the museum building.
Miners' Days also includes a PowerPoint presentation on ranching and farming produced by the Okanogan County Historical Society.
The showing takes place at 7 p.m. Friday at Conconully Community Hall. Featured in the program will be many photographs by Frank S. Matsura, who lived in Conconully during the early 1900s and chronicled Okanogan County's people for a decade.
An open house will be held at the museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. In addition to its displays, spinning and weaving demonstrations will take place. Refreshments will be served.
Visitors also may explore Conconully United Methodist Church, also known as the little white church and the county's first Protestant church, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The historic building features furnishings installed in 1903 and saved when the original building was destroyed by fire in 1930.
Saturday evening's program is the 11th presentation of "Saturday Night Live-ly," an old-time talent show featuring vocalists, instrumentalists, actors, and humorists.
The program begins at 7 p.m. at the church. Producer is Connie Palmer and master of ceremonies is Jay Harder. Refreshments will be served during intermission.
The Conconully museum is open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through Labor Day and by appointment at 826-4308.
